French Cuisine Friday : Poulet au Citron et au Moutarde

Note : This is part of the French Cuisine Friday Series which is now based off the list of 44 classic French Meals You Should Try Before You Die

This was posted in November 2013
Back in 2008, when I studied abroad in Paris, ISA (the company that I used) took us to a French chef's apartment to get a hands on cooking class. I used to have the printed out recipes and the woman's backgrond but I don't know where the papers are. The only thing I remember that we made was chicken that was marinated in oranges, lemons and dijon mustard. Tonight for dinner we are having that chicken but without the oranges.

This is a rough recipe
Chicken - either breasts, a whole, wings, any part really - I am using wings
Lemon juice - 2- 3 tbs
Lemon slices
Dijon Mustard (that's the spicy one) 1-2 tbs
olive oil
salt and pepper, dried parsley (optional)
Mix the lemon juice and mustard and some olive oil in a cup.
Salt and pepper, parsley the chicken
and then brush the lemon mustard sauce on the chicken
Put the lemon slices on the chicken.

Put in the oven at 350°  until the mustard sauce is nice and golden. and then enjoy!

French Cuisine Friday : Classic French Meals & Desserts You Need to Try Before You Die !

A few weeks ago, one of my friends shared this link on Facebook and it set off a light bulb about the French Cuisine Friday series. The link is a list from Buzzfeed.com which has complied 44 Classic French Meals and the best part is they recommend a dessert to go with it, so it is more like 88 Classic French Meals and Desserts to try.

So, instead of trying to figure out what to make every week, I can refer to this list of classic French meals and desserts to try before you die, pick one, make it and then write about it and share the recipe.
So now, both my husband and I can enjoy and learn about French cuisine instead of eating Turkish and/or American every day. And you can learn some French recipes and vocab too!

Recipes will include :

4/4 -  Pot au Feu (literally a pot on a fire) - #12 on the list
4/11 - Ratatouille - like the disney film - #27
4/18 -  Piperade - the French Basque version of Ratatouille - #13
These recipes will be from old posts, as I will be out of the country for 3 weeks!!!
4/25 - Poisson | Baked Fish - similar to #7
5/2 - Poulet au Citron et Moutarde | Lemon Mustard Chicken
5/9 - Moules | Mussels - #3
5/16 - Tarte Tatin | Upside down Apple Pie - dessert of #3
Back to the list :
5/23 - Buckwheat Crepes - #4
5/30 - Baked Camembert - #3
6/6 - Blanquette de Veau - # 5
6/13 - Claufoutis - #3's dessert
6/20 - Yogurt Cake - #14's dessert
6/27 - Pissaladière - #25

List will be updated regulary....

French Cuisine Friday : Prix du Café en Terrasse

Today's French cuisine friday's post is based on this sign.
A few days ago on 100% mag on the M6 channel (French tv), they talked about this sign at a French café in Nice. The Guardian wrote a nice article in English about the sign read it here.

Recently I went to the doctor's office and the receptionist refused to help me before I said "Bonjour". I swear I said it, but she kept repeating it like I didn't. Manners, really are still important in today's world.

French Cuisine Friday

I have decided to start a series called French Cuisine Friday where I will show you a French cuisine item I made during the week. I will post pictures as well as the recipe and some background on the item and possibly including some French vocab in the process.

This week, I am reposting items that I have made in the past :
Upside Down Apple Pie / Tarte Tatin
Crepes
Mussels / Moules
Fish / Poisson

so try one of these out this week and let me know how it goes!

Next week, is a famous French dessert that my mom was dying to have when she was here and kept complaining about how much she wanted to eat it until I finally made it. What do you think it is ?

French Toast

One day for breakfast I decided to make French toast or as they say in French "pain perdu"/lost bread. Probably because it's origins are really not French.

It was delicious. I used oat bread found and sliced at the boulangerie, powdered sugar and cinamon and 2 eggs with a Turkish coffee. I need something strong to start my day off with a bang !

How do you like your "Pain Perdu"?

Where's Waldo in France

The other day, I had some time to kill before meeting up with friends near Notre Dame. So I went to Gibert Jeune to do some book-looking, I had told myself in advance that I am not allowed to buy new books, because I still have not touched the ones I bought a month ago !

Obviously they all are about cooking, I am obsessed if you didn't already know. I always love to try out a new recipe and tweak it into my own. At the time, I thought "I need some cookbooks in French to learn new vocab and cook with friends who speak French" but that still hasn't happened. I am determined to make some bread this afternoon, we will see how that goes

For those of you don't know, Gibert Jeune are the bookstores that have yellow signs at Saint Michel. Mainly it is a used bookstore. They have a nice variety of used English fiction books as well, I have bought a few Mary Higgians Clark that I love to reread and reread. So, as I was strolling along the rows of used books.

I stumbled upon "Where's Waldo?" but in French it is"Où est Charlie"/ "Where's Charlie?" My first reaction was why is it Charlie, is Waldo just too weird for them ?

So I decided to do a little research and I stumbled across this blog. Even though it doesn't have a really good explanation, I didn't think I could trust the Wikipedia version, their "you know you are American when..." are pretty funny.

Try to find Waldo !
